Eye exams for children

When to see an optometrist about your child’s vision

Your child’s vision will heavily influence their learning and even their behaviour from a young age. Booking regular eye exams for children is vital to creating good vision for life.

It’s also important to identify a situation that may not seem right when it comes to your child’s vision. Complaints of eye discomfort or tiredness, conjunctivitis or redness in the eye can be symptoms of a greater eye health issue, so seeking support from an experienced optometrist is important.

The best treatment for any vision problem is to detect it and treat it early.

When should I book my children in for an eye exam?

We recommend that you book an eye exam for your child if:

  • Your child has conjunctivitis, itchy or watery eyes, or you think there may be something stuck in their eye that is causing discomfort. We recommend booking an appointment with us ASAP if that’s the case, and we’re happy to hold urgent appointments to ensure their vision is looked after.

  • You’ve noticed that your child’s vision may be impacting them in the learning environment or during play. Perhaps they’re tripping over things, avoiding reading, have frequent headaches or complaining of eye fatigue.

  • Even if your child shows no symptoms, we recommend booking your child in at around six months, two years and again before they start school . It’s important to maintain these visits as an annual, routine check-up, as their eyes will continue to change as they grow and develop.

The Eye Place

An eye exam and experience designed for little eyes

We know that any medical or health examination can sometimes be a battle for parents, and scary for children. We get it, many of our team have kids too! We have years of experience in diagnosing and treating common eye conditions for children, and also in providing the right setting for children’s eye exams.

Our Optometrist, Adam, and our friendly team will ensure your child feels comfortable during the eye exam, so we can get the best result for their eye health.

We’ll speak with you to understand your child’s general health and if you have any concerns around their vision. We then assess their functional eye movement, distance and near vision, test their eye pressure and perform an overall internal and external examination of their eyes. If it’s early on in their eye health journey, we’ll also test their:
  • Colour vision – so we can detect colour blindness;
  • Depth perception – measuring their ability to see objects, which is important in keeping them safe;
  • Tracking – which impacts their ability to read; and
  • Saccadic and pursuit eye movements – which impacts your child’s ability to scan a scene and focus on objects.
